Not a good news day on the Plains

Not a good news day for our friends to the West just across the state line

That was totally unacceptable

Post by William

This is unacceptable. How can UGA go the last 9 minutes of a HOME game without a field goal? The Dogs were up 50-37 at home and lose. Unacceptable. awful loss at an awful time.

The most important thing in basketball is the basketball. The Dogs act like it is a hot potato. Vandy got every offensive rebound.

Dogs better have a 'come to Jesus" meeting before heading to UT on Saturday.

PS. Who is Carter Blackburn and why do I have to listen to him? He's terrible. I googled him to see if he was a Vandy grad.

Time for Bball Dogs to step up

Post by William

Sorry for lack of blogs lately. We've been busy.

Tonight starts a huge stretch for the UGA bball team. Vandy comes to Athens tonight-7:00 on ESPNU- looking to break a tie w/the Dogs for 2nd place in the SEC East.

Florida   9-2   RPI  17    OFF This week
UGA      6-4   RPI  40
Vandy    6-4   RPI  17
UK        6-5   RPI  12    Beat Miss St last night-AWFUL call before half that was difference in the game
Tenn      5-5   RPI  28    Hosts USC tonight
USC      4-6

UGA needs this win for seeding in the SEC tourney and for some style points for the RPI.

Saturday it continues for the Dogs. They travel to ObKnoxville to take on the Vols and their admittedly cheating cheesy coach to try to make up for the horrible home loss the Vols handed UGA earlier in the season- CBS 1:00. Then Thursday the Dogs travel to Gainesville-7:00 ESPN. Those 2 home losses could end up being very costly. Very tough, very important stretch.

We have a shocker!!!

Ok. The results from the poll are in. In what we think is a big upset, Marisa Miller wins 56%-44%. Like I said there are no losers. Thanks for voting.

PS.....only 23 hours left to vote in our poll. it's on the right side.

Big Night for UGA BBall

Post by William

It's a big night for UGA bball tonight. Non-conference Xavier comes to Athens-7pm on ESPNU. This could really help UGA getting into the Big Dance. Xavier's RPI is 24, UGA is 36.  Also Xavier's AD is on the selection committee. Need a good performance in front of him.

Get in line or hit the road

It's taken 10 years but it looks like Coach Richt is finally putting his foot down.

http://blogs.ajc.com/jeff-schultz-blog/2011/02/08/crowells-recruitment-aside-washaun-ealey-did-this-to-himself/?cxntfid=blogs_jeff_schultz_blog

I got this as an email this morning. Tells you something about the kind of man Coach Richt is.

I’ve been a football fan all of my life, and have called football games on the radio for the better part of 30 years. I know how important it is to win, especially in the Southeastern Conference, unquestionably the most dominant football conference in the universe.
This past season for the Georgia Bulldog football team wasn’t one most UGA fans will want to remember. The year ended with the first losing record of head coach Mark Richt’s career, and predictably, many Georgia fans were calling for the head coach to be fired.
We’ve all seen coaches screaming at the top of their lungs at their players, many of them cursing with every other word. And of course some of them get away with it because they win on the field more than they lose, so their fans put their hands over their eyes and ears and say that it’s all ok because, hey, after all they are winning.
A devout Christian, Mark Richt has never been a screamer or a cusser. But some ‘experts’ even criticized him for those aspects this year, saying that ‘top’ coaches never bring their religion into play, that intensity and winning should be their primary focus. Basically, because he is a coach who prefers to let his actions speak louder than his words he has been a target of criticism.
I want to share a little story with you that illustrates clearly there should be much more considered than whether or not he is winning more often than he is losing that measures the worth of a coach – and a man.
Three weeks ago, James Eunice of Valdosta went duck hunting on a big lake in Lowndes County called Ocean Pond. A 17-year old senior at Valdosta High School, Eunice was a talented baseball player who had already been accepted at the University of Georgia.
But as talented he was on the baseball diamond, Eunice was more passionate about football. He was an emotional leader on the most recent edition of Valdosta’s legendary Wildcat football team. And even though he wasn’t a star on the gridiron, his desire made him determined to be a part of the Bulldog football team once he got to Athens.
So with that dream in his mind and burning in his heart, Eunice had written Mark Richt a letter that spelled out his plan to walk on at UGA in the fall and be a Dawg.
At some point while on the before mentioned hunt, Eunice apparently fell out of his boat and drowned. His body was recovered last Monday, and his funeral was held this past Saturday.
The Valdosta community was stunned. For a bright, young life so full of potential to be snuffed out so prematurely, lives across the board were shaken from their foundations.
For the last two years, Eunice’s Wildcat football teammate, Jay Rome, has been one of the most highly recruited players in the nation. While all of the confusion and despair about Eunice was going on, Rome was one of the top players who committed to the University of Georgia. At the memorial service for his friend, Rome spoke. As part of his message, Rome read a personal letter written to the family from Mark Richt.
Mind you, this was a letter written during perhaps the busiest period of the year for big time college coaches, a time when they are crisscrossing the nation recruiting those players that will be the lifeblood of their programs for the coming years. For weeks at a time they don’t see their own families while trying to convince top football players in every nook and cranny across America to come to their schools.
In the letter, the Bulldog’s head coach opened up about his own heartbreak in learning of Eunice’s passing, and also offered his most sincere prayers for the family. He also shared how he had been contacted by Eunice about his plans to walk on the Bulldog football squad.
Richt stated that Eunice’s name had been added to the teams’ roster, and thusly he had officially ‘made the team.’ The family was then presented an official UGA jersey emblazoned with "EUNICE" across the back, and ‘23’ - the number Eunice wore at Valdosta.
Those gathered at the funeral for James Eunice stood, applauded, and cried.
I know if yu are a head football coach at a major university you are supposedly paid to win. I understand that ultimately championships and such are your measuring stick, and that just goes with the territory.
But any human being who believes that any victory on the football field could be more important than what Mark Richt just did for the family of a young man whose life ended much too soon needs to take a long look in a mirror.
Like football, life isn’t a game that should be solely measured by whether or not you lose or win. Rather, it should be measured by how you play the game and whether or not God’s rules are at the center of your performance, both on and off the field.
Coach Richt, thank you for the reminder of that fact, one too many of us forget far too conveniently.

Play the freaking game already!!!

Post by William

Are they ever going to play this game? ESPN is having a four hour pregame until 2 then Fox has a four hour pregame. What can they possibly talk about for 8 hours? (Of course I do have it on). As a diversion til kickoff, there is some good cbball and the Phoenix Open is on until 6 (Golf Channel at 1, CBS at 3).

There are some really interesting prop bets for the game today.... who wins the coin flip? Total catches for Hines Ward? Will there be a safety? Will Christina Aguilera's hair be anything but all blonde?(No lie, that's a bet). There's one I couldn't find..... Is Fergie really a man?

Ok, here's my pick. 2 very even teams, 2 great defenses, 2 really good QBs. Very fast track today. I'm going to go with the hot QB..... I'll take Green Bay and give the 2. Green Bay 28, Pittsburgh 24. Should be a great game.

Have a great Super Bowl Sunday.

Heat Check at the Super Bowl

Post by William

After a great Signing Day, we're 3 days from kickoff. Thought we'd throw you a changeup today. More on Super Bowl tomorrow.

Ok. I've had enough analysis of the Super Bowl. I've also had enough of all the current and former players on Radio Row in Dallas pushing products, Sam Bradford-Axe Hair Products, Jerome Bettis- Guiness.

HOWEVER, there are two people that can sell me product. Brooklyn Decker is there pushing the Adam Sandler movie she's in. Marisa Miller is there pushing the upcoming Sports Illusrated swimsuit issue.

Some announcers who have interviewed them have said that in a "Heat Check" between the two, Brooklyn Decker wins hands down. I'm not sure about all that but if it's true..... BEST runner-up EVER!!!
We want your opinion. Please vote in the poll on the right. Just remember.... there are no losers here. We all win!!!

Brooklyn Decker

Oh what a beautiful day!!!

Post by William

#1  What a FANTASTIC job by the coaching staff at UGA. The idea that they signed this class with the storm cloud over the program is phenomenal. Now we need Jenkins on Saturday.

There are several good things about this class. First UGA won the state. Hasn't been happening lately. Secondly, it fills needs(especially if Jenkins signs) and is very talented. Third, it looks like UGA will be able to redshirt at least 15 of these guys. The studs(Crowell, Drew,Mitchell, Rome, Marshall) will play. (Getting Turene was a huge bonus). Finally, UGA won South Georgia.  One from Thomasville, one from Moultrie, one from Leesburg, one from Rochelle, two from Valdosta-been forever since the Dogs were there-, and one from the big metropolis of Camilla.

I know there are alot of us out there who want CMR to go. I understand. I know you're going to say..."He signs a great class every year and does nothing with it." I'll grant you some of that. Nobody's happy.... but will you at least be happy for one day??!! Bask in the glow of something great happening today. You can go back to being pissed off again tomorrow.

#2  Coach Fox and the bball team arrived a little while ago in Fayetteville to play the Hogs tonight. Need this win badly. For those of us that don't get Comcast, you can watch Dogs/Hogs at 9pm on ESPN3. I watched UNC/BC last night. Very watchable on the net.  http://espn.go.com/espn3/index

Finally, since I'm in such a good mood today, I thought I'd give you all something to laugh about. Makes me laugh anyway.

It's a BIG, HUGE Wednesday

Post by William

#1  It's a BIG, HUGE day for the Dogs Wednesday. The whole state will be unproductive tomorrow as 17-18 year olds determine the fates of our favorite teams. Isaiah Crowell signs at 1:30 on ESPNU. There are 2-3 more UGA might can sneak in tomorrow as well(Turene and Richardson). John Jenkins signs on Saturday 2/5. He was in Gainesville over the weekend. Here are 2 links on how important  day it is for the Dogs.

Check http://www.ajc.com/sports/ for updates all day long.

Here's a link to a great site for the Crowell announcement at 1:30 Wednesday. They did a great job for the Ray Drew announcement.

Also, WR/KR/QB Logan Gray has decided to transfer to finish his career closer to his family in Missouri. He didn't pan out to be the highly rated QB he was recruited to be. HOWEVER, he kept going to practice, changed positions, fair caught punts, ran down on punts and kickoffs, is scheduled to graduate on time at the end of the semester, and NEVER got into any trouble. Thanks Logan. Good luck in the future.

#2  I'm not exactly sure what's going on over at Ga Tech but they've lost 5 commitments in the last few days. Coach Johnson pulled one from a kid who took a visit to FSU. Keep an eye on that Wednesday.

#3  Basketball in this state is not very good. UGA is in last place in the SEC East after teasing us for 2 weeks. They have some talent and I like the coach. WOW. does that sound like another sport in Athens?
At Tech it really looks like Coach Hewitt has almost lost his team. Sunday night at home against Maryland...LOTS of empty seats. I think the end is near.

Side note as I type this.... Two and a Half Men is freaking hilarious. Charlie Sheen is bad but really funny.

#4  I guess Urban Meyer got a lot of rest in 31 days. He retires from Florida on New Years Day to spend time with his family and to get healthy. Yesterday he signs w/ESPN to work his tail off. Not my favorite person.

http://www.ajc.com/sports/urban-meyer-signs-with-823113.html

#5 On a happier note..... great job by former UGA golfer Bubba Watson last week in San Diego. He held off Mickelson with a crazy birdie on the last hole. Then Phil almost holes out from 80ish yards when he was TRYING to. With his caddy tending the flag. The guys on the tour are phenomenal.

By the way, Tiger finished tied for 44th and afterwards acted like he'd never picked up a club before. Drama.

#6  Braves pitchers and catchers are having a "voluntary" pitching camp at Turner Field this week. They report to Disney for Spring Training on 2/14. Here's a good article about the Braves new manager. I think I'm gonna like him.

http://blogs.ajc.com/jeff-schultz-blog/2011/02/01/as-braves-get-started-fredi-gonzalez-looks-like-cox-2-0/

#7  I like the buildup to the Super Bowl but by Friday I'll be sick of analysis, stupid questions, etc... Play the game!!!

*****UPDATE    9:02 pm   Ole Miss beats Kentucky!!!!

Have a Happy Signing Day.
